Why Take This Course?
The point of many apps and websites is to get the user to buy, subscribe, sign up, or donate. In short, they’re often about money. That’s not a bad thing as it pays the rent and your salary. The X factor in whether those sites and apps are successful often comes down to the words. We’re not talking about the marketing copy, but the UX writing that can move users through an experience and increase the conversion rate leading to the sale or some other action. This class will introduce you to systems and writing approaches that can move the needle in a good way. At the same time, we’ll dive into voice and tone to make sure that whatever words you choose are consistent with the company’s personality.

Course Description
Through lectures, looking at examples, and lots of hands-on practice, you’ll learn how to apply usability principles and create a voice chart to optimize the effectiveness of the writing on your website or app. We’ll plan on covering these topics and more:

  • The difference between voice and tone, and why both are important

  • Creating voice and tone charts

  • Applying usability criteria for UX writing, so you know when words are getting in the way of greater effectiveness

  • Heuristically scoring existing UX text to scope, organize, and prioritize the improvements that could be made

  • Practicing ways to make targeted improvements to conversion rates using voice and usability criteria
